The project will replace the current two-lane bridge over Interstate 215 with an eight-lane bridge. The new bridge will have two through-lanes and two left-turn lanes in both directions. The project also will:

  • Remove the five-point intersection and 12 stop signs west of the freeway and replace these with new intersections controlled by traffic signals
  • Realign freeway on-ramps and off-ramps and add meters and carpool preference lanes to the on-ramps
  • Rebuild the 4th Street/Redlands Avenue intersection
  • Widen 4th Street (State Route 74) between G Street and Redlands Avenue
  • Widen Redlands Avenue from Interstate 215 to San Jacinto Avenue
  • Build sound walls and retaining walls
  • Build an eight-foot sidewalk on the west side of the bridge

The total project cost is an estimated $29 million. Approximately $20 million is from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, better known as federal stimulus funding. The project also is funded with Transportation Uniform Mitigation Fees and Measure A, the half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements in Riverside County.
